What's for sale?

This is a 1940s set of five small coffee cups and saucers with matching coffee pot.

It's a good example of wartime earthenware with a simple design that avoids excess but still includes touches of Art Deco styling, like on the cup handles. The colouring is subtle and they've used parallel lines instead of a second colour. Today the cups are a perfect size for espresso.

This Woods Ware range would have been found regularly in cafes, schools, village halls and hospitals. It was also available in Beryl Green and Iris Blue.

Who made them and when?

It was made in the 1940s by Staffordshire pottery manufacturer Wood & Sons Ltd. The maker's marks read:

  • WOODS WARE
  • JASMINE

  • There are a few faults from manufacturing:

  • Each cup is 5.5cm high and 8.5cm from rim to handle
  • Each saucer is 2cm high and 11cm in diameter
