What's for sale?

This is a green Sowerbys water jug with four matching glasses made from Vaseline glass, also known as uranium glass.  It's from their pattern 2550 Water Set, made in clear glass and also in four colours: amber, blue, flint grey and this green. Some colours are harder to find, which affects the price, but they're all sturdy, usable glassware.  The tumblers are harder to find than the jugs.

Uranium glass is so called because of the minuscule inclusion of Uranium Dioxide during manufacture. It's harmless and no more radioactive that than most other things in our homes; the glow under UV light is not radioactivity but a chemical reaction.

This jug's fluorescence has been tested under UV light, as shown in our photographs.

Who made them and when?

It was made by Sowerbys' Ellison Glass Works Limited of Gateshead in the 1950s (see the catalogue reproduction at 20th Century Glass). They weren't always sold as a set and it's  harder to find jugs with matching glasses.
