What's for sale?
This is a hallmarked solid Sterling silver brooch representing the flower, lily of the valley. It has a gold stalk and stem, also hallmarked, which forms the settings for the five paste or diamante flowers.
Who made it and when?
It was made in 1916 by Birmingham jewellers Arthur Johnson Smith. The main hallmark on the back reads:
- AJS (for Arthur Johnson Smith)
- An anchor (the mark for Birmingham)
- A Lion Passant (the sterling silver mark)
- A lowercase "r" which style represents 1916
There is also a single Lion Passant stamped on the gold stalk as it enters the body of the brooch. There are no other marks on the gold, due to its size.
What condition is it in?
- In very good condition
- A good working clasp
- There is a slight depression on the back near the hallmark
