What's for sale?

This is a small and quite rare, metal and plastic desktop thermometer from the 1950s or 1960s.

It has a typical Space Age design from the period, with a red dial, a metal body and feet and a chrome-effect plastic bezel and dished, clear plastic cover for the front.

The metal casing has been engraved with a geometric, op-art pattern that gives the illusion that the casing is hollow. It's an interesting design touch.

It was made by the reliable British maker Rototherm, with scales in Celsius and Fahrenheit and has a double ended arrow for dual readings.

Accuracy appears to be good when compared with a digital thermometer. Rototherm thermometers can usually be adjusted. The chrome-effect bezel can be removed easily, and although it looks like the dial and thermometer could be prised out, we haven't tried to remove them.

What condition is it in?

  • Second-hand
  • In good condition
  • There are no cracks or chips anywhere
  • There is a mark on the clear plastic cover
  • There are several marks on the back of the metal body
  • The chrome-effect bezel has wear on several places, but is still highly reflective
  • The reading is fairly accurate

What are the measurements?

  • 7.5cm high (3 inches)
  • 6cm length (just under 2.5 inches)
  • 6cm diameter (just under 2.5 inches)
  • 69 grams
