What's for sale?

This is a beautiful, Edwardian, silver-mounted decanter, decorated with overlaid, green trailed glass. It was made in 1901 for Ollivant & Botsford, and has a silver collar hallmarked for John Heath and John Middleton.

It's a flattened cylinder form with vibrant, green glass trails adding a touch of Art Nouveau to the design. The elegant silver collar has a flared rim and is completed by a twist molded stopper.

The collar is stamped for John Heath and John Middleton of Hukin & Heath. They were also known for their silver work on a number of designs by Dr Christopher Dresser.

Who made it and when?

It was made for Ollivant & Botsford Goldsmiths & Co of Manchester in 1901. The company was founded in Exchange Street by Thomas Ollivant, John Josiah Ollivant and John Botsford in 1855. The collar is stamped and hallmarked:

  • ollivant & botsford
  • manchester
  • The initials JTH and JHM in a quatrefoil
  • An anchor, for the Birmingham assay office
  • The Lion Passant (the sterling silver mark)
  • A "b" (which style matches 1901)

What condition is it in?

  • Second-hand
  • In good condition 
  • No chips or cracks
  • The stopper is very good 
  • Several small bubbles in the body
  • Two bubble distortions on one side at three quarter height
  • A larger bubble distortion on another side at one quarter height
  • A squiggle of light scratches (approx 12mm x 4mm) on another side, at three quarter height, which doesn't show in our photographs
