What's for sale?
This is a beautiful set of six tall, cut-to-clear, lead crystal hock wine glasses in six colours. They're by the well-regarded German glass maker Nachtmann.
Cut-to clear describes the technique of layering coloured glass over clear glass and then cutting the pattern to reveal the clear glass beneath.
The Traube (grape) pattern is composed of grapes, leaves and geometric cuts and demonstrates the high quality work of Nachtmann. They're made of 24% lead crystal and have an intricate, faceted stem and star-cut foot.
At 20cm high, we think these hock glasses are the best of the range. The bowl is shaped to bring the best out of German white wine (Hock is an English term for such wines). We use them for most types of wine.
Some sets become available in pairs of colours, whereas this is a sought-after set of six different colours.
Who made them and when?
Nachtmann is a long-established, German manufacturer of lead crystal, based in Weiden, Bavaria. The Traube pattern has been made for well over 70 years. That and the durability of their crystal, means that it's difficult to date precisely.
What condition are they in?
- In perfect condition
- All still with labels and possibly unused
- No chips or cracks
What are the measurements?
- 20.5cm high
- 7cm in diameter
- 257 grams each glass
- 1542 grams for the set
