Jeannette Jadeite Green Glass Flour Shaker

A small, American flour shaker or sifter. Second-hand.

What's for sale?

This is a small, American flour shaker, sifter or caster in pale green opaque glass from the 1930s or 1940s. It's labelled "FLOUR" in black print and has a rust-proof, thin metal screw top which is peppered with holes for sifting the flour. The trademarked Jadeite glass has a subtle marbled appearance and a slight translucence like porcelain.

It was made by the Jeannette Glass Company, which was founded in the late 1880s in the city of Jeannette, Pennsylvania making pressed-glass kitchen & tableware.

It was the Mckee Glass Company which introduced Jadeite glassware in 1932. Jeannette's own range of jadeite began later in the 1930s and in the late 1940s they actually bought the McKee Glass Company.

This piece glows under UV light and is therefore probably from the 1930s or early 1940s, when jadeite glass contained tiny amounts of uranium. This causes the glass to fluoresce under UV light by a chemical (rather than radioactive) reaction.

There is no maker's mark, and there are visual similarities to the McKee range. However it has an opening of 1.25" which matches the smaller openings of the Jeannette jars. The shape and lettering also matches a Jeannette catalogue page for their XS Square range (salt, pepper, sugar and flour).

What condition is it in?

  • Second-hand
  • In good condition
  • No chips or cracks in the glass
  • The threaded glass neck has dark marks from the metal top
  • The lettering is faded but readable
  • There is a tiny pit in the glass below the "F"
  • The screw top has many scratches and small dents

What are the measurements?

  • 12.5cm high (4.92 inches)
  • 6cm square (2.36 inches)
  • 315 grams
