What's for sale?

This is a Sterling silver bracelet of champlevé and basse-taille enamel panels, beautifully-decorated with scenes from the Norwegian arctic.

It comprises nine Sterling silver panels, joined by pairs of silver links and fastened by a push-pull, box clasp. It's fitted with a silver safety chain.

On each of the wide panels is a basse-taille sunburst, decorated with four arctic scenes. We have a reindeer pulling a sledge, a polar bear, a sunset and a Viking longboat. On the smaller panels are silver, champlevé flowers with blue petals.

Basse-taille (low cut) is the technique of engraving a pattern in relief and covering it with enamel, such that the engraving is still visible beneath.

Champlevé (raised field) is the technique of hollowing out bordered sections and filling them with enamel, such that the enamel and borders are at the same height.

Who made it and when?

It was made by the Norwegian jewellery manufacturer David Andersen, known for high quality, silver jewellery since 1876. His descendants run the business today. The maker's mark reads:

  • a pair of scales (the International Convention hallmark)
  • 925
  • S (in a circle)

There are no other marks, so it's difficult to date. However, we think it's an older example and from the early to mid 20th century.

What condition is it in?

  • Second-hand
  • In good condition
  • One white panel next to the clasp is tarnished in one corner
  • There are faint scratches on the edges and reverse of the panels
  • The clasp works fully

What are the measurements?

  • 18cm long (7 inches)
  • 1cm in width
  • 24 grams
