Crown Ducal Large Chintz Vase

A classic, large, English vase from around 1920. Second-hand.

What's for sale?

This is a large Crown Ducal vase in their classic chintz pattern, A500, from around 1920.

It's a six-sided vase, beautifully proportioned and complimented by a hexagonal mouth. This shape of vase was produced with a variety of patterns and this pattern was available on a variety of forms, including bowls, plates, biscuit barrels and rose bowls.

It is a very colourful, transfer pattern of birds, flowers, leaves and berries and a very typical, busy, chintz pattern. The rim has also been edged with a single line of gold-coloured paint. We're not aware of a name for this pattern and Crown Ducal didn't name them all.

Who made it and when?

Crown Ducal Ware was a range produced by A G Richardson of Tunstall, Staffordshire, England. The maker's mark on the base was in use from around 1918 to 1922:

  • "A500" in gold is the pattern number
  • Then there is the Crown Ducal strap-and-buckle style stamp above
  • A.G.R & Co Ltd
  • England

What condition is it in?

  • Second-hand
  • In very good condition
  • No chips or cracks
  • The gold line around the rim is very worn and missing in parts

What are the measurements?

  • 28.5cm high (11 inches)
  • 15cm in diameter (6 inches)
  • 994 grams
